[Cell Physiology] NTNU Researcher: Medaka Will Unfold Secret of Human Disease Genes (Chinese Version)

PTS (2010/08/30) Recently the research team of the Department of Life Science, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), discovered a better animal model, Medaka, than mice for human genes studies, via which the team had succeeded in identifying the disease genes of kidney problems and hearing disorder.

Medaka has transparent body. With 100x optical microscopes, the internal organs, blood vessels and even the red blood cells are easily observed. Because of this feature, Associate Professor Li-Yih LIN began to unfold the human genetic coding via this kind of fish. According to LIN, this species of fish is a better animal model than mice for the studies of human genetic coding, because mouse model has a large and complicated experimental scope.

LIN and his team innovated the application of microelectrodes technology to fish study, so that the investigation of a single cell would become operational. With the techniques, a single medaka embryo can be amplified for six hundred times. With the skin cell on the embryo, the team has discovered the disease gene for kidney problems. Besides, with the hair cell on the medaka lateral line, the cause of human hearing disorder is to be understood. The findings of the team are in turn published in international journals.
